Maintaining self-respect is crucial to happiness and insult is all about feeling disrespected due to the action or behavior of someone. Although insult may make you feel hurt, but reacting aggressively can make the matter worse. That is why, it would be good to maintain your composure and respond effectively to the people who insult you.

The reason for feeling insulted could be anything like offensive comment, lack of respect, paying no heed to your opinion, and of the same. To get over the feeling of insult, you need to change your perspective towards it and do not let it get the better of you. Here are a few tips that may help you to overcome insult:

1) STAY CALM AND COMPOSED

In the face of being insulted, you should make a sincere effort to stay calm and composed. To maintain your composure, you can do deep breathing exercise or start counting numbers to divert your attention and that give you time to think the best effective ways to react.

2) CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE

Change your perspective and interpret criticism as differences of opinion; not as a sign of insult. Compliment the person who criticize you and accept their opinion, if it seems feasible and practical to create an aura of trust and respect in your surroundings.

3) LOWER YOUR EXPECTATIONS OF OTHERS

An insult often occurs when our expectation does not materialize. When you expect love, care, and respect of someone and if you do not get the same, you feel insulted. So lower your expectations of others in order to get rid of the feeling of being insulted.

4) DO NOT TAKE INSULT PERSONALLY

Sometimes people used to insult others just to release their own pent up frustration. They are very much insecure people and jealous about you. Do not take it personally, laugh it off, show compassion towards them and let them change their mindset.

5) IGNORE THE INSULT

Ignoring the insult is an effective way to keep yourself unaffected and at the same time make the people who insult you feel regret for their action or behavior. To ignore the insult, you can change the topic or just walk away and keep yourself busy with other productive work.

6) EXPRESS YOUR FEELING

Expressing how you are exactly feeling to the person who insults you is the best way to let them know that how their action or behavior is affecting relationship with you and what would be other consequences if you report it. By expressing your feeling, you would get relieved and no longer carry the feelings of insult.

Hence, having a sense of self-worth enables you to be less concerned about others and that in turn helps you to stay calm and not get rude to the one who insult you. Ignoring the people, who try to insult you, would frustrate them the most because they get failed in their intention to control you by making you angry and reacting foolishly. In other words, you can also smile at people, who insult you and walk away, signaling the message that you are unaffected to get them thinking.
